Bidri-ware is a zinc alloy with silver inlay. The zinc is melted
and the alloy is cast into a mud die. The molded zinc is engraved
by an artist with a grooving chisel and pure silver is inlaid
in the grooves. Then the Bidri design is dipped in a boiled
solution of natural earth found only at the Bidar Fort.
As a result of this process the zinc turns black and the
silver shines with a brilliant contrast. The Bidri art has
its origin in Persia over 500 years ago and exists today primarily
at Bidar in the Karnataka State of India.
